Overview (ISO)

In recent years there has been observed, even in international level, the application of specific requirements based on standards at running a company /the operating level of an enterprise.
There are standards that certify the minimum requirements for the business operation and are issued by either the International Standardization Organization (ISO) or by the European Union and individual national standardization institutions. In Greece, such institution is the Hellenic Organization for Standardization - ELOT which is responsible for standards publication and harmonization.

A company could claim that it meets all the requirements and relative specifications. But meeting all standards and obtain a certificate do not suffice because: What establishes and distinguishes it, not only in society but also to other companies, is the fact that it effectively keeps all established and internationally acceptable standards.

Certification Institutions

The standard certification under which a company complies is awarded to after inspection in order to prove that it complies with it. The inspection is run initially by specially authorized certification institutions that have been licensed by the state.
Nowadays in Greece there are 35 certification institutions, many of which are private companies representing public agencies but also foreign organizations such as TÜV (Germany), Lloyds (England), and SGS (Switzerland), ABS (USA).

It must be noted that systems, as well as their certificates, indicate the correct operation of a company based on principles of environmental quality and not based on manufactured products. E.g. a company has the following operation standards.

ISO 9001-2000 refers to how well organized is a business function, thus achieving a minimum and granted level of certification.

ISO 14001 or European EMAS Regulation ensures that a company is not charging  the environment during its operation.

AGRO 2-1 and 2-2 (Greek Standards), EUREPGAP (European Standard) Standards refer to integrated management in agricultural production, environmental quality and health safety. All standards provide specifications as well as the operating mode of a company in order to ensure proper quality management and environmental management as well as the compliance with relevant legislation. Many companies may adhere until now to some or all specifications but these standards address an integrated management system of each subject.

HACCP or ISO 22001 refers to food safety and everyone that participates in food chain production is compelled to apply it (Producers, Traders, Carriers, and Restaurants etc.).

ISO 22000 is the most recognized and integrated solution in the field of food and related products. It is a Safety Management System and Hygiene of Products that includes the concept of HACCP (Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points), traceability (agropath) and application of relevant legislation of each food type, while its design mode makes it compatible with other management system standards such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 in order to enable integration of different management systems into a single united and integrated management system.
It aims for the effective control and prevention of all possible risks through identification, evaluation and analysis of stages in the production process in order to minimize or reduce these risks to acceptable levels. ISO 22000 is a preemptive standard and does not examine qualitative characteristics but focuses on the safety of food and products.
ISO 22000 is applicable to all businesses/enterprises related directly or indirectly to the food production chain. From the primary sector and feed and foodstuff production, processing, storage, transportation, distribution, retail and supply of food to consumers and businesses that provide services or supply equipment, packaging materials, cleaning and disinfection materials etc. to food businesses.

AGRO 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, but also AGRO 3.5 standards describe requirements related to:
  • Agro 3.1: Refers to specifications for pig feed production.
  • Agro 3.2: Refers to specifications for pig breeding.
  • Agro 3.3: Refers to pig slaughtering.
  • Agro 3.4: Refers to cutting, processing and packaging of pork meat.
  • Agro 3.5: Retail places of pork meat.
These standards ensure the welfare of animals, stockbreeders’ protection, consumer protection as well as environmental protection.

AGRO 4 - 1: ensures the system management dealing with the quality assurance that aquaculture products must have the production standards and product quality control.
AGRO 4 - 2: ensures the correct operating specifications of the aquaculture packaging installations.
Standards AGRO 4 - 1 and AGRO 4 - 2 help aquaculture businesses develop a management system that ensures the quality of aquaculture products thereby enhancing products in a dynamic way.

AGRO 6: a management system to ensure product quality of sponge fishing and sponge culture.

AGRO 7 refers to the requirements that need to be followed by any company involved in feed production, animal breeding, poultry and fish farming, and their production and availability on the market.
Specifically, it consists of individual chapters which set specific requirements for each product category in the production chain for:
Feed production for reaping dairy animals or meat, but also for raising poultry for meat or eggs or even fish stockfarming. It also refers to the processing, packaging and marketing/trade of milk. In addition, it refers to livestock and poultry slaughtering but also to the standardization and packaging of meat, fish and eggs and finally at meat sales points.
